THERE IS A MISINFORMED IMPRESSION that all prophets employ the phrase “Thus said Yahweh” and related expressions. One even finds entire books on the prophets titled Thus Says the Lord, as if the phrase in some fashion encapsulates the essence of all the prophets.1 However, such phrases by which God’s words are identified in the prophets are not characteristic of all the prophets, or even most of them.
